Best Sitcom Ever

When I was a youngin' I was left primarily on my own, to my own devices. My mom, dad, and older sister all loved to read and really didn't watch the telly. So, I was in general, always with the tv, always had control over the tv. Even when I was young, 7-12-ish I watched mostly adult-themed shows.

I never watched the retarded Mister Rogers, I found him condescending, and all those other kids shows were horrific. The only kid thing I did watch and still do watch on occasion, is the old Wile E. Coyote vs Road Runner toons, and classic Scooby Doo tunes. Also watch the basic Looney Toons shows, but I preferred the two mentioned previous.

Not only did I watch adult shows, I often stayed up late, so I got to see some hardcore stuff...well, at least for the 80s it was hardcore. I watched "thirtysomething" (a show I vaguely remember loving, and I desperately am waiting for them to solve their dubbing issues and get that show on dvd), Cheers, A Different World, NYPD Blue from the beginning Caruso era, etc. I even vaguely seem to remember seeing Miami Vice.

Other shows I don't remember, but I think they formed a lot of my ethical and viewing foundation. I like reality, as shitty as is may be. This is why I prefer reading non-fiction, and watching the current events of the day...I get their significance and I don't want to hide from reality through crappy fictional books.

As an adult, I have high degree for intolerance for those who don't believe in equality for all. Especially, African Americans/black people and homosexuals. I am not a homosexual, but I follow their plight and support them simply because of the travesty of their situation and how they're generally treated by society.

I always used to say the best Sitcom ever was the Coz...The Cosby Show. This was a simple, but funny show that showed African Americans working in powerful positions, being highly professionally and personally successful, and I think that gave me that equality foundation. I loved that show, and if I catch it on WGN on occasion, I'll stop and watch them.

But, all that changed with the advent of Seinfeld. My sister just got me off my Amazon Wish, List Season 8 of Seinfeld, and I am clamoring to open it up, but I will not do so until summer break because I will mostly likely watch the season close to straight-through. And, I would not be a kind teacher to my students the next day if I don't get my sleep.

It is, it was, it will forever be, I believe, the funniest shit ever put on television. A show about four stuck up New Yorkers who are so self-absorbed, so self-involved it's hysterical. I used to chide Jerry Seinfeld for being a bit pushy about the money he was making, but after watching a few seasons of Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm...while Seinfeld would not have been funny without him, Jerry and the other writers kept the absurdity of that show in check.

Larry is George Costanza to the millionth degree. George is funny because he's not THAT crazy, truly...but, Larry David is just abominable. Curb Your Enthusiasm is so ridiculous, it's not longer funny, it's just a moron showing how much of a petulant jackass he is.

So, hats off to Seinfeld. In my opinion, THEE best sitcom on American television...ever.

P.S. Postscript: I must say I do remember the Bob Newhart Show and that shit was hilarious. Pssst...just downloaded some of that, see if it's as funny as I remember. Newhart and the late Tom Poston were great together.
