This is about the case that has had NYC on edge since November 2006. Sean Bell was killed on his wedding day when 3 NYC cops pounded over a whopping 50 bullets aimed at his chest. I admit freely here, I don't know the dirty full details of this case beyond cursory lowlights mentioned in media reports ever since the event occurred.
What I do know is this: When 31 of those 50+ bullets are fired by one cop, semi-automatic gun or no, that's not a good start. But, apparently the newly-married and probably drunk Mr. Bell didn't acquit himself well either.

As undercover cops, these officers had a duty when they tried to deal with Mr. Bell and his group that they indeed were cops.
It seems that the judge in this case acted judiciously in my opinion. Clearly, Detective Oliver (the one who shot the 31 bullets of over 50), has a plausible story, but he still needs to be dealt with administratively. There is virtually no reason a cop should be blowing through 31 bullets...but then again, I've never fired that type of gun and apparently, this 12-year veteran hadn't fired his gun in action before either, so maybe he was freaked a bit by being caught in that position.
The judge was prudent here. In such a mess of a case where it was clear several humans made several bad choices, it was a no-win case. I agree with the judge's decision to acquit the 3 cops, but I also hope that there are some administrative things the NYPD does to handle these men; especially Oliver.
As sad case, and it's closed.
