LBJ

I've never been a fan of JBJ. But, some new tapes recorded by him in the Oval Office, while on the phone with various people of note in his day, when he was President were released yesterday.

Most of the newly released tapes appear to center around the year 1968, the year Johnson decided not to seek re-election and four days later, MLK Jr. was assassinated.

The most interesting thing I read in this story I linked above is this little one sentence paragraph:

"At home, he was battered by rising anxieties about inflation and demands for tax increases and spending cuts from Congress."

This is the America I long for. This is the America I believe in. Where sacrifice was shared by all, and American's demanded that everyone pitch in for the greater good.

The starkness of that singular line, in a nondescript story, about some tapes recorded 4 decades ago...rings in my soul...and it pains me so.
