Illegals

Wonder..is it slightly, severely, or a non-issue: Anytime I see a latino walking about...especially buying lotto tickets, that I ponder the possible likelihood that they are, in fact, an illegal?

I only ask because the calculation is consistently on my mind.

I'd put it between slightly and severely. The only reason you are able to have that thought is because they wear their ethnicity out in the open. You couldn't think the same about a Russian, Romanian, or other European immigrant unless you heard them speak - yet there are illegals here from Europe and Asia, as well.

So yes, I'd have to say you are questioning based only on appearance, since you have no other criteria with which to judge.

If you don't have the same thought whenever you see an Asian (lots of Chinese illegals), then I'd push it more towards the "severely" side of the equation, taking into account that the media attention illegal Hispanics receive in this country also plays a part.

That you question why you do it is a good sign, though. It shows, to me, that there is not malice when you have that thought.
