Some of the same stereotypes about why I abhor golf, are included in this asinine definition of a "sport."
I think people who follow horse (or dog) racing should shot. Literally. This is not a sport, it's the enslavement of an animal for man's pure satisfaction and enjoyment.
It's not that much different than the animal against animal fights done way back when, not to mention the Mike Vick fiasco. Sure, these animals aren't mauling each other with their teeth, and trying to kill one another...but it's still not far off.
Just like in golf, a sport dominated for years by rich, white, old, men who had their secret little clubs (eg: Augusta National), so is the activity of horse racing.
There is big money in raising, grooming, training horses to run, and there's much bigger money if you manage to land a winner of a race with the likes of Kentucky (1/3 of the Triple Crown). Huge money, in fact, despite the fact that no Kentucky Derby winner has gone on to father/mother a horse that wins the event in the years following.
But, this is the real tragedy of horse racing. It's bad enough horses are enslaved to rich, white men with buckets full o' cash, it's bad enough they are essentially forced to run, but what happened during today's race is the prime reason this "sport" is no sport at all, and it should be outlawed immediately.
A horse, Eight Belles, had to euthanized...errrr....freaking killed...on the track, after breaking both her ankles. If that's not bad enough, it's apparently possible that this poor horse ran the majority of the race and finished in second place with said broken ankles. To even say this is a possibility, shows how barbaric this "sport" is.
To breed, train, and run a horse that is willing to run through a race with possibly two broken ankles (so, broken she had to be whacked on the track) demonstrates how enslaved these animals are.
I'm not a PETA guy. I think PETA often goes way over the line in some of their advocacy, but this is just horrific.
