In today's NY Times, there's an article on the AIDS epidemic. Apparently, there is research/evidence suggesting that the epidemic has peaked. The numbers are starting to decline, and the massive group that had AIDS in the poorest countries have largely died off, making it harder for the epidemic to travel through human to human sexual contact.
This is seems to be a sure thing assuming all the things are done that should be done, in terms of prevention here. A recent resurgence in some cities in the country have experienced a rebound of AIDS cases due to people thinking the worst was over, and it was safe to go back to not using condoms and other protective methods, only to see a spike.
But, generally, the AIDS epidemic is essentially over. They make a good comparison to the bubonic plaque. How it swept across Europe, finally being subdued, and now while it still exists, and some 2,000 people still get the plaque every year, it is largely curable. We can only hope this is the beginning of the end for AIDS.
